Stress Release Massage?

Stress Release Massage (SRM) is a unique complementary health technique that harnesses your body’s natural self-healing ability to reduce pain and improve physical and emotional wellbeing.

Is SRM for me?
Stress Release Massage is for everyone…and every BODY! Most of us carry stress and tension from our everyday lives. Some stress in our lives can be positive. After all, stress caused by everyday challenges can help us to grow and develop. But when that stress becomes overwhelming, it can start to affect our mental and physical wellbeing. A regular BSR session can help to keep your body in balance – offering relief from small aches and niggles to more serious pain and discomfort. Body Stress Release is suitable for all ages including infants and the elderly.

What our clients say?
BSR has helped me massively with ongoing pain and tension in my neck, shoulders and knees. It has made a huge difference, I highly recommend Body Stress Release

About Body Stress Release
Body Stress Release (BSR) is a unique complementary health technique, researched and developed in South Africa in the 1980s by Gail and Ewald Meggersee, and practised worldwide.

Body Stress Release offers a gentle and effective way to release stored tension from the muscles, and works with your body’s natural desire to be stress-free.
This stored tension may be the cause of discomfort or other symptoms you’re experiencing. This can include a multitude of indications such as backache, neck pain, headaches, sciatic pain, cramp, constipation, vulval pain and anxiety – to name a few.

Our bodies store this body stress in layers, often over many years. Think of the layers of an onion. With BSR we encourage the body to release these layers, just like peeling back the layers of an onion.

Body Stress Release uses information provided by your body to locate stored tension. This could be affecting your nervous system and, therefore, your body’s ability to function to its fullest potential.

What is body stress?
In day-to-day life we’re subjected to different kinds of stress: physical, mental, emotional and chemical. Our bodies are designed to adapt to this positively until we find ourselves under excessive stress. When we reach this point of overload, the muscles can tighten in a protective action attempting to limit movement in the affected area – a joint or tendon perhaps. This tightening can result in the stress or tension becoming locked into the body’s physical structures. This is what we call ‘body stress’, and over time this accumulative build-up of body stress exerts pressure on the spinal nerves and may cause pain, numbness, muscle weakness, stiffness, distorted posture and impaired functioning.
At first you may feel progressively tired and achy, but later pain, stiffness, or numbness might set in. The effects vary, but the result could be a slow decline in overall health as it reduces the efficiency of your body’s natural self-healing ability.

Very often a client will report that their extremely painful symptoms have been brought on by the tiniest of movements, when in fact this seemingly insignificant movement is likely to be the last straw, resulting in body stress becoming locked-in. The physical tension needs to be effectively and precisely released to encourage and restore normal functioning, and in order to stop the cycle of stress overload and compensation.

What is body stress?
* Physical stress, an injury, strain or poor posture
* Emotional stress, bereavement, work issues, relationship problems
* Mental stress,
* Covid-19 stress,
* Spiritual stress
* Chemical stress, air pollutants, additives, chemicals in household products

Back Pain
We believe that the key to maintaining a healthier back is to maintain the natural curves of the spine. Your practitioner can advise on how to achieve this and give you simple exercises to improve your core strength.
Roughly 8 out of 10 people in the UK are affected by back pain at some point in their lives.

Many of our clients are often seeking relief from lower back pain. If you have back pain, you could be experiencing anything from a general tightness, restriction of movement or stiffness in this area, to a constant dull ache or more severe pain.

An accumulation of body stress in the lower back can be caused by poor posture, incorrect lifting, trips and falls, standing or driving for long periods, twisting and bending in one movement or repetitive exercises which can overstrain the muscles.

Body stress in the lower back can also affect the nerve pathways to the abdomen, hips, groin, legs, knees and feet and potentially cause pain or discomfort in any of these areas. Impact on the nerve supply to the internal organs may contribute to problems with the digestive system, bladder or reproductive system. An ache between your shoulder blades or a stabbing pain that intensifies when you take a deep breath are often also associated with body stress in the lower back, ribs or diaphragm. Releasing body stress in these areas can reduce the pressure on the nerve pathways and allow the body to function more normally. Many clients report that their symptoms improve or disappear altogether after their BSR sessions.

Neck pain
Body stress in the neck may be a contributing factor to the cause of headaches, migraines, tinnitus, snoring, rounded posture, restricted movement, dizziness, poor sleep, visual disturbances, poor concentration, pins and needles in your hands, irritability, poor concentration and even depression.
An average adult head weighs around 4.5kgs – quite a weight for our neck and shoulders to bear. Neck muscles also tend to take the strain of any mental and emotional stress by tensing and tightening. And if you spend hours hunched in front of a computer or looking down at your mobile, your neck will almost certainly let you know.
Exposure to chemical stress (which can be inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin) can show as tension at the base of the skull. You may feel irritated/angry or be suffering from intense nauseating headaches. Perhaps you find yourself rubbing your neck and shoulders to ease discomfort and stiffness, without really knowing where your ‘pain in the neck’ comes from. Maybe you are nursing an old whiplash injury or recovering from an emotional shock.

Shoulder Pain
Carrying a heavy bag, holding a baby for long periods of time, playing a musical instrument, weightlifting, sleeping on one side more than the other, slouching on the couch, sports that require throwing with one arm or using your chest and shoulders a great deal (like swimming or gymnastics) – these can all play a role in a build-up of body stress around the shoulder.

An increased use of tech devices is wreaking havoc on our posture, as we tend to hunch our shoulders forward. This can tighten the muscles at the front of our shoulders (above and below the collarbone), around the shoulder joint and our shoulder blades at the back. And if you’re deskbound, pain can often be worse on the side you use as your ‘mouse’ hand.

Repetitive use (RSI) or osteoarthritis are common causes of shoulder pain. When we’re in pain we instinctively tighten up the muscles surrounding the troubled area in order to limit movement and prevent further pain. But this lack of movement may be making symptoms worse. Pain or a tingling sensation travelling down your arms into your hands is often a telltale sign.

Sciatic Pain
BSR has a great track record in helping clients with sciatic pain and other problems relating to the lower back. In the meantime, avoid any activity which might irritate the nerves in the lower back such as heavy lifting, bending and twisting.
Many people experience sciatic pain (sciatica) along with lower back pain. Sciatic symptoms are generally caused when the nerves exiting the spine in the lower back are compressed or irritated by tight muscles.
The sciatic nerve runs from your buttocks and down your legs to your feet and is responsible for much of the sensation and motor control of the legs and feet, so you may be experiencing:
* Pain radiating from your lower back into your glutes/hip and down your leg
* Shooting pains or burning sensations in your leg and/or foot
* Worsening pain when sitting or driving
* Tingling, numbness or weakness in your leg and/or foot
* Difficulty moving your leg

Headaches and migraines
Headaches and migraines needn’t be a life-sentence. Many of our clients have found considerable, if not complete, relief from their symptoms after their BSR sessions. Our practitioners also give advice on posture to minimise stress and tension in the neck and shoulders.
The king of neurological head pain is the migraine. These headaches are often a sign that stress is being stored somewhere in the body.

Most of us have experienced a headache at some point in our lives and sadly many people experience them regularly, sometimes every day. The most common headaches are tension headaches. They seem to start with tension in the neck and shoulders and can be triggered by poor posture. Negative emotions like work-related stress, anger or shock could also be a factor. Some niggling, foggy-eyed headaches might be put down to dehydration or screen-fatigue. Even a strong perfume or other chemical influences can trigger a headache for some.

Stress and anxiety
An accumulation of mental and emotional stress affects the body. Negative emotions can cause your body to tighten, and that stress can contribute to various health conditions.

Clients who come to Body Stress Release looking for relief from their mental and emotional stress very often have other symptoms of stored stress as well. While BSR can’t address the root causes of your mental and emotional upset, releasing stored tension from your body can help with your general wellbeing. You might even find that you’re able to adapt to your stresses in a more positive way.

Feelings, thoughts or events that may result in you storing body stress can include:
* Feeling anxious, fearful or unsafe
* Feeling depressed, helpless or hopeless
* Feeling lonely, shut out and unappreciated
* Low self-esteem
* Lack of fulfillment/boredom
* Worrying about the future
* Shock, anger, resentment
* Suppressed emotions – conscious or unconscious
* Financial worries
* Difficult relationships with your boss or other colleagues
* Work pressures/redundancy
* Family responsibilities
* Difficult or disintegrating family relationships
* Divorce/separation
* Exam stress
* Peer pressure/bullying
* Death of a loved one
* Diagnosis of an illness for you or a loved one

Sports and fitness
By releasing stored tension with regular Body Stress Release sessions, you’ll aid your body in its recovery and assist it towards the prevention of injuries by limiting the accumulation of stored body stress. Many athletes and sports enthusiasts have said that BSR has helped enhance their performance – from golfers to runners and swimmers to yogis.

The old saying ‘no pain, no gain’ has long been discredited. Pain is actually a warning sign that you’re pushing yourself beyond your limit and into overload. Listen to your body and accept that you might need a break. Your back, for instance, might feel looser after you’ve exerted yourself, but other problems can arise like tight hamstrings or painful/unstable knees.

When body stress is present in the lower back, any exercises which reverse the natural curve of the lumbar spine should be avoided, e.g. repeated toe-touches or sit-ups. When body stress is present elsewhere, the deep muscles enter a protective state which can disturb the nerve supply to the legs and even your digestive system.

What happens during an appointment?
During your first appointment your practitioner will give you a brief explanation of Body Stress Release and take a detailed case history.

You remain fully clothed and will either be lowered down, or asked to lie down, on a specially designed couch. The practitioner will test your body for body stress using a series of gentle reflex tests along your spine and other areas of your body as required. Your body will indicate the exact sites of body stress, and your practitioner will apply a gentle but precise stimulation to the affected areas to encourage your body to ‘release’ the tension, thereby restoring communication and its natural self-healing abilities.

After carrying out the releases, your practitioner will explain what they have found, advise you on posture and show you some simple self-help techniques.

Your practitioner will book three initial appointments for you over a period of two weeks. It’s important that you attend all three appointments, as BSR is a process and some clients can experience increased sensitivity – especially after the first release.

Responses are often rapid, although you may need further appointments depending on how your body responds and how long the tension has been stored.
